ShopHappens: How long have you been sewing? How did it spark your interest?
Sarah: I’ve been sewing for other people for the past 10-11 years, but my interest in sewing began much earlier. My Grandma had a big influence on my passion for sewing. She was always sewing something for someone and she made nearly all of my dresses as I was growing up. I learned a lot from her about sewing as I was growing up, and I also had a neighbor who sewed. I remember one year she gave her daughter (who was my best friend) and me sewing lessons (we were both home schooled). I still have some of the sewing supplies I got for that class and use them every day! 🙂
It wasn’t until I graduated from high school that I really started doing a lot of sewing, although I did many smaller sewing projects before then. I started off making a special Christmas dress and pinafore for a little friend who was my buddy, and my ministry/business blossomed from there.
Almost immediately I discovered a need among the homeschool families in our area for someone to sew for them, and I was happy to find a need I could fill. I have enjoyed sewing for the local families here, but in the Fall of 2009, I decided to also open an Etsy shop.
SH: What inspires you to create clothing for girls?
Sarah: I love going to the fabric store and browsing the many beautiful fabrics. I wish I could buy them all and have time to sew things with them, but since I can’t, I pick some of my favorites. I don’t always have something specific in mind when I buy the fabric, but I always come up with something.
I love sewing for girls and creating beautiful, modest, and feminine clothing for them. Sometimes it’s really hard to find clothing in the stores that doesn’t make little girls look like teenagers.. I love creating girly and pretty clothing for them.
SH: What are some of your favorite colors/patterns? How do you incorporate them into your work?
Sarah: I love purples, blues, and pinks, and often use those colors. Most little girls like those colors too, so it isn’t too hard. 🙂
SH: What type of girl would love your pieces?
Sarah: I think several kinds of girls would like the things I make, but mostly it will be the girly girls who like ruffles, twirl skirts, etc. I know the little girls who model for me always have so much fun “playing dress up” with the outfits. 🙂
SH: What is your workroom like? What conditions lead you to create the best work?
Sarah: My sewing room is in the center of our house and is the spot my Mom, sister, and I gather nearly every afternoon to work together. Since I am at the sewing machine probably 6 hours a day, I usually have something on to listen to. I love Classical music and enjoy listening to Classical music online or books on tape. I like to keep my mind busy while my hands are at work. I also really enjoy when I can have my windows open and get the fresh air!
SH: How long does each piece take to design and create?
Sarah: Depending on what I’m making, a typical outfit probably takes about a day or two to make from start to finish. Usually I’ll cut out a bunch of things over a few days, and then I can enjoy sewing them without having to stop and cut out the next outfit.
SH: What is your favorite product so far?
Sarah: I don’t know if I have a favorite product, but the patchwork twirl skirts are really fun to make and the little girls seem to love them. 🙂
