For our first Etsy Spotlight, I am pleased to introduce you to Terry Kelly from The Green Bead. Terry’s store features one-of-a-kind jewelry made from semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystals, and glass beads at an affordable price.
I have been a happy customer for a long time now, and I am so glad that Terry was able to drop in to answer a few questions.
ShopHappens: How long have you been making jewelry? How did you get involved in it?
Terry Kelly: I’ve been making jewelry for 5 years now. I got involved in making jewelry because I used to buy a lot of it and one day I thought, why the heck am I not making my own jewelry. Of course, the jewelry (if you want to call it that) that I made in the beginning was a little uninspiring, but you have to start somewhere.
SH: What inspires you to create jewelry?
TK: I love the whole process—from looking at vintage beads, different metals, and combinations of materials. I usually think about what I want to work with for a while (kind of have that far off look while I visualize the piece). When I’m making custom pieces, I think about what the person would like and try to make the piece fit the individual’s personality.
SH: What are some of your favorite colors and patterns? How do you incorporate them into your work?
TK: I love rich colors–gorgeous pale blues and deep reds. It kind of depends what kind of mood I’m in to what I want to work with. I don’t think there is a particular pattern that is my favorite. Anything is up for grabs!
SH: Who are some of your favorite celebrities? Who can you see wearing your jewelry?
TK: Interesting question. I haven’t really thought about it. However, I do often look to see what jewelry anyone on TV or in the movies is wearing. It is great when I go to work and am sitting in a meeting and everyone is wearing something I made. I wouldn’t mind seeing a news anchor or an actor wearing my jewelry. That would be pretty neat. Right now, I’m working on a bracelet cuff for a wedding in June. That will be exciting to see the bride wearing a special piece on her special day.
SH: What is your workroom like? What conditions lead you to create the best work?
TK: I turned my dining room into my craft room (who needs two rooms to eat in?). Right now, my craft room is a little messy. I like it to be neat and organized so that I’m able to find what I need when I need it. I spent a weekend a couple of months ago getting everything organized and sorted.
