TOMS Shoes is a company with a different story. From the TOMS website:

In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers.

TOMS Shoes Ash Canvas Women's Classics

The TOMS Canvas Classics are a great option if you are a first time buyer.  I had originally purchased them for my aging grandmother who needed an easy to wear pair of shoes. She loved the style and thought they were great, but unfortunately, her doctor recommended another brand specifically for her condition.

By the time she’d visited her doctor, the return period had expired.  I contacted the TOMS customer service department by email and requested a return. At first, they stated that the shoes could not be returned or exchanged, but when I explained the situation, they were very accomodating. Instead of a return for cash back, I asked if the shoes could be exchanged. This was acceptable, and I picked out a pair of TOMS for myself.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but let me assure you — TOMS really does make some great footwear.  I own the Ash Canvas Classics pictured above and I’m a huge fan. They are lightweight, comfortable, and versatile. I’ve worn them with everything from skinny jeans to Bermuda shorts to casual dresses.  These are the type of shoe that you can really buy in every color — they are truly that comfortable.  (And I have picky, blister-prone feet!)

I haven’t seen TOMS in stores very often, but I know that Nordstrom carries a few of the classics.  If you’re curious, you might just want to try them there.

Final verdict:
TOMS Shoes is not only a company with a heart, but also a brand that is solidly designed, focused on comfort and style.  Recommended for all ages.

Have you tried TOMS shoes yet?  What do you think?
