I’m pleased to introduce you all to Annemarie from My Crochet Shop! Annemarie makes adorable crocheted items and she is our first Etsy Spotlight who lives outside of the United States! When I was a very young girl, I received a crochet set for Christmas one year and had so much fun trying things! I never moved past potholders, so I’m always very impressed with artists who are able to create crocheted items because of that experience 🙂
Annemarie has just started taking custom orders for her heart garlands, so feel free to start up a conversation to discuss! She also has her own blog that talks about her creative process in both Dutch and English – very cool!
How long have you had your Etsy shop? How did you get started crocheting?
I started to crochet a year and a half ago and within days I was a total addict. I really love working with a lot of colours, but I also like to combine just two or three colours. Because I cannot keep everything I make in my house, I decided to start an online shop. I started it at the end of last year and I’ve had a few sales already. I hope people see from my listings that it gives me great pleasure to crochet.
What inspires you to create crocheted items?
I think I am just a happy person, feeling blessed to live a happy and free life and for me that’s already inspiring. But besides that I’m inspired by a lot of things. I love to look at other peoples work and get ideas from that but some ideas just pop up in my head or while I’m sitting around thinking what my next project should be. Yesterday I woke up in the middle of the night and the first thing I thought was I had to make a cornflower blue hearts garland. So that’s what I’m making right now.
What are some of your favorite colors/patterns? How do you incorporate them into your work?
I love stripes and hearts. Just look at my Etsy-shop and you see them come back everywhere. The only thing I don’t have are striped hearts, but hey, maybe I’ll figure that out one day too (-:
What is your workroom like? What conditions lead you to create the best work?
My workroom is quite messy to be honest, but that doesn’t bother me. I work best when I have a lot of spare time (which is not very often unfortunately) and when there’s lots of coffee at hand. I’m a real coffee addict so you won’t see me crochet without coffee! And cookies ofcourse (-:
How long does each piece take to design and create?
If I make a Little Hearts Garland XL, it takes me at least one entire evening from start to finish, but if I make a mouse it takes me about an hour. It really depends on how difficult or big something is.
What is your favorite product so far?
My favourite products are blankets. There are pictures of some of them in my Flickr-album. I love making them but unfortunately there’s not much interest for them. Maybe prices are too high compared with blankets that are not handmade. But making a crochet blanket takes a lot of time and I think you can only finish a huge blanket when you make it with a lot of love. Actually, people that don’t crochet should realise that sometimes it takes weeks to make a blanket, and in the end a customer only pays for the materials that are used. So, I have a lot of blankets in my house but I’ve stopped making them because I had too many and they don’t sell. But if anyone wants it as a custom order for a blanket, I’d love to make one again! (-:
What is the most interesting request you’ve received?
The best request I received was the request of my nieces to crochet them both a little bag. I made it out of t-shirt yarn and they are for sale in my shop now. I loved making them because in the end my nieces were so proud and happy with their own design.
