Wow! I recently learned that Nordstrom (one of my favorite department stores) is all set to acquire HauteLook (one of my favorite sample sale websites) for $180 million! Is this a match made in heaven?
To be honest, I’m not sure. I am always a little leery of change. While it’s pretty clear that HauteLook will continue to operate as a subsidiary, is Nordstrom going to dictate HauteLook’s offerings? Will the only brands offered at HauteLook be something you can find at Nordstrom too? I suppose only time will tell.
My initial reaction is cautiously positive – this is a big step for the sample sale circuit and I think a very wise business decision for Nordstrom.
I can’t help but wonder how this will affect the referral programs and payouts for sample sale sites. That’s one of the main draws for me – getting a sign-up bonus and seeing some cash when my friends and family shop. If sample sale sites are going to be run by “old school” retailers like Nordstrom, will this program continue? I’m already disenchanted with the changes made at Gilt Groupe – but that’s a story for another day.
