I’ll start this post out with a disclaimer: I am probably the laziest Netflix member of all time. I’d get a movie, watch it that day, then keep it in my DVD player for weeks, if not MONTHS. I think in my two-year membership, I received 6 or 7 movies from Netflix. So when I canceled the service, it made financial sense. I sometimes wished I had a DVD on hand to watch, but I don’t have a Blockbuster membership and it makes no sense to buy movies if I don’t know if I’ll enjoy them.
Anyway, I was looking for something inexpensive to do with the boyfriend this weekend since we’re both feeling the post-Christmas budget blues, and we ended up renting The Social Network from Redbox. It was so convenient and at only $1/day to rent, VERY affordable! Of course this means that you need to return it pronto! Luckily there is a Redbox very close to the boyfriend’s house, and you can return movies to ANY Redbox, not just the one where you received it.
I mentioned to the boyfriend that Redbox was awesome and probably more cost effective than Netflix. We figured that if you rent one movie a week and return it the next day, that’s only $4/month, while I was paying about $8/month for Netflix. Not bad at all. Of course, if you have unlimited movies from Netflix and watch a TON, $1/day is not gonna cut it, but I think for most folks, this is a pretty good alternative.
Another thing I love about Redbox is that they frequently offer free movie promotions. For example, starting today through Valentine’s Day (Feb 14), when you rent any two movies at one time you will be emailed a code for one FREE rental! You must provide your email address to receive the free movie code, and you have to check out TWO movies at once.
And for another free rental code, you can “like” Redbox on Facebook!
Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.
Thanks to Lisa at Fantabulously Frugal for sharing this deal!
