And now for the Q&A!
How long have you had your Etsy shop? How did you get started crafting?
Well the date of when I opened my Etsy shop can be misleading. I opened it November 3rd, 2009 (my wedding anniversary)…and there it sat until recently. I used to do local craft shows and did quite well, but they died out around here. Then I consigned my crafts at a local craft boutique, but the birth of their new pricing structure, I had to leave because I’d have to raise prices to an unreasonable level.
How I got started crafting? My grandmother was a flawless seamstress. My mother couldn’t even sew a button on a shirt. I was very fortunate to live within walking distance of my grandmother. She nurtured my love of all things handmade. Though I’m no seamstress, I love sewing crafts! My grandmother gave me my first sewing machine. A hand-me-down, but it was my prized possession.
What inspires you to create your items?
I find inspiration from all sorts of things. Some from magazines, books, and especially blogs! I’ve even found inspiration from commercials. The commercial can be about a breakfast drink, but there is something in the background that catches my eye and I go with that. Other times, it’s just a need. “I wish they made a….” and then my brain starts racing.
What are some of your favorite colors/patterns? How do you incorporate them into your work?
I’m in love with hot pink right now, and polka dots! I used to hate polka dots, but it seems the older I get the more I love the bright colors…and dots! I also like damask! and I love anything in strawberries. I grew up in the “winter strawberry capital of the world” and have several family members who are strawberry farmers so it’s only natural that I love those sweet fruits! (Strawberry fabric is hard to find!) Ok, I love all sorts of patterns.
What is your workroom like? What conditions lead you to create the best work?
You mean “the black hole” ? My husband used to joke that he was afraid to go “in there”, because I might not find him. LOL It’s not that bad anymore, but when I’m engrossed in several projects at the same time… well, let’s just say I’m more creative than organized! The conditions that lead me to create my best work? Well, I need everything out where I can see it. I hate jumping up and down to get something. But a clean floor gives me a good feeling.
How long does each piece take to design and create?
Oh that’s a good one. I will “obsess” for days and, depending on what it is, weeks. I’ll try to sketch it out (I wish I could draw!) before I actually cut it out. That’s not saying that it actually works after I do all that. To be able to give an actual start-to-finish time? I can’t do that. It just depends.
What is your favorite product so far?
I particularly like the strawberry purses I’m doing right now. Partly because of my love of strawberries, I guess, and partly because I’m such a “bag lady”! I’m a sucker for a purse. And I like the shabby watermelon pins too! I did these in craft shows and they were quite a hit. Hmmmm…. I’m seeing a fruit thing going on here. LOL
