Yesterday I stopped into my local JCPenney and was pleased to see a large section dedicated to MNG! Way back in college, I spent a short semester abroad in Spain, where I fell in love with this brand. It was affordable, trendy, and well-made. I actually still have a few tank tops I bought way back then.
The MNG by Mango collection launched at JCPenney in August 2010. “The launch of MNG by Mango is a testament to our success in making JCPenney a first-choice style destination and the department store leader in fast fashion,” said Liz Sweney, JCPenney’s executive vice president and senior general merchandise manager. “Contemporary apparel for women is our fastest-growing category and we believe the launch of MNG by Mango at JCPenney – with its standout shop-within-a-shop experience and constant flow of fresh new merchandise – will allow us to create a sense of discovery for our customers every time they shop, allowing us to grow our market share.”
Speaking as a member of that target group, I was very pleased with how the collection was shown. The “shop-within-a-shop” definitely piqued my interest and drew me in to take a glance through the items for sale, which included apparel, shoes, jewelry, and belts.
The first thing that caught my eye was a tobacco-colored striped sweater dress. The tie detail around the waist and the three-quarter sleeves are trendy while still classic, and stripes are very popular right now. I was going to purchase, but unfortunately it wasn’t available in my size. You better bet that it’s on my wish list though. I can see this dress being worn almost year round. Cover it with a blazer with some tights and boots in winter; push the sleeves up and wear some strappy heels for a cool summer night out.
Another item that caught my eye was a white ruched top. I’m always interested in twists on classic pieces, and this one fit the bill. The ruching detail would look nice under a cardigan or blazer, and the simplicity of the classic white makes it very versatile.
Overall, I think the MNG by Mango line at JCPenney is very promising. The styles are cute and contemporary without looking cheap, and the price is decent. If you live near a JCPenney store, it is definitely worth stopping in to take a look around. If I make it back to the mall soon, I’m going to check out MNG jeans – they looked like very good quality for their price point (retail price around $70, currently on sale for $56).
With MNG by Mango, Bisou Bisou, Allen B, and I Heart Ronson all showing at JCPenney stores, I can’t help but think that this department store is on its way up! I’m excited to see what comes next.
