Yesterday, BF and I ventured out to buy all kinds of decorations for his house. We started out at the Dollar General near the house, where he was able to find the following:

  • 800 lights
  • 6 boxes of wall clips
  • 2 mini stockings
  • 4 red/gold bows
  • 6 silver bows
  • 2 cute figurines
  • 1 bag of fake snow
  • 1 lighted garland
  • 6 unlighted garland
  • 2 sets of mini-ornaments
  • 1 box of ornament hooks
  • 1 table runner
  • 3 lighted gift boxes (so he’ll have presents under the tree even if he doesn’t get any haha)
Dollar General Total: $90
(BIG thank you to a kind customer who gave him a $10 off coupon for holiday decorations!!)
Next stop was BJs (membership club… like a Costco)
  • 1 lighted wreath
BJs Total: $30
Next stop, Target.  At Target, he got:
  • 3 boxes of shatter-proof ornaments
  • 2 boxes of glass ornaments
  • 1 tree topper
  • 2 stocking hangers
  • 1 ribbon
  • 2 indoor light timers
Target Total: $120
And the last stop, Home Depot.  I was personally very impressed with the selection available.  The collaboration with Martha Stewart seems like a good idea for them. We regretted getting the lights at Dollar General and the timers at Target – they were MUCH cheaper at Home Depot.  Anyway, at Home Depot, he got:
  • 1 tree stand
  • 4 C batteries
Home Depot Total: $20
Based on the adventure, some recommendations for those of you who have yet to decorate:
  1. Home Depot is actually a decent place to buy holiday decorations.  It was the best price for lights (even better than Dollar General) and timers, and they had a great selection.
  2. If you know what you’re looking for, you can decorate an entire house for under $250.  Not bad for a first time decorator!  If you have older stuff and just need a few fillers, even better!
  3. You can dress your car up for Christmas too! (see below)

Do you have any tips for decorating/shopping for decor?

I love great deals! We don’t have a Dollar General in LA but I’m assuming it’s like the Dollar Store. That place makes me dizzy but my niece loves it! Maybe I should get reacquainted with it!

It is a great place! It’s kinda like a mix of a dollar store and a grocery store. I definitely recommend dollar stores as the first place to go if you’re on a budget. They get a bad rap, but sometimes the stuff there is super cute!
