Labor Day Sales 2026: The Five Categories Worth Buying and the Ones to Wait On
Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7 this year, which means the sales start showing up around Friday, August 28 and run hard through that following Tuesday. Ten days of “biggest sale of the season” emails, most of which are describing the same discount the same retailer ran in July.
But a few categories hit their true annual low over Labor Day weekend, and a few more are being cleared out permanently. Knowing which is which is the difference between a good weekend and a cluttered garage.
🛏️ 1. Mattresses
Labor Day is one of the two best mattress weekends of the year, alongside Presidents Day. This is not marketing. Mattress manufacturers release new models in the fall, and retailers need the floor space and warehouse capacity cleared before the new lineup arrives.
What that means practically: last year’s model is being discounted to move, and last year’s model is usually identical to this year’s with a different cover fabric and a new name.
How to shop it: Look for the previous model year specifically, not the headline percentage. Ask a salesperson what changed between the versions, because the honest answer is frequently “the ticking.” Check whether the sale includes the bundled extras, since free pillows and a mattress protector are often worth $200 and are the first thing dropped from a “better” advertised discount.
Also confirm the return window. A 100 night trial is meaningless if the sale terms shorten it to 30, so read the fine print on sale-priced units.
🔥 2. Grills, Patio Furniture, and Outdoor Everything
This is clearance, not a sale, and the distinction matters. Retailers are not discounting outdoor furniture to be generous. They are getting it out of the building before the seasonal reset, and they will not restock it.
Discounts on patio sets, grills, outdoor cushions, umbrellas, and fire pits routinely reach 50% to 70% over Labor Day weekend, and they get deeper through mid September. The tradeoff is selection. By the time the discount is best, you are choosing from whatever is left.
How to shop it: Decide now whether you want the deepest discount or the piece you want. If you have a specific set in mind, buy it Labor Day weekend. If you are flexible and just want a grill, wait two more weeks and take what remains.
Check the floor model policy too. Display units on outdoor furniture often carry an additional markdown on top of clearance, and a patio chair that lived indoors under fluorescent lights is in perfect condition.
👕 3. Summer Apparel and Swimwear
Everything summer is being liquidated to make room for fall inventory. Shorts, sandals, swimsuits, sundresses, sun hats, all of it.
This is the best buying window of the entire year for these categories, and it stays good through late September. The only cost is that you are buying twelve months ahead, which is fine for adults and a gamble for growing kids.

🧺 4. Large Appliances
Washers, dryers, refrigerators, and ranges get real Labor Day discounts for the same structural reason mattresses do: new model years arrive in the fall, and the floor has to be cleared.
Appliance pricing is also one of the least transparent categories in retail, with manufacturer minimum advertised pricing that makes every retailer show the same number while competing on rebates, bundles, delivery, and haul-away instead of on price.
How to shop it: Compare total delivered cost, not sticker price. Free delivery, free installation, free removal of the old unit, and extended warranty inclusion swing the real number by several hundred dollars. Ask specifically about bundle discounts if you are buying two pieces, since washer and dryer pairs carry a discount that is often not advertised.
Also ask about open box and scratch and dent units in the same visit. A dent on the side panel of a refrigerator that sits between two cabinets is worth a substantial discount for a cosmetic flaw nobody will ever see.
🛠️ 5. Tools, Paint, and Home Improvement
Home improvement retailers treat Labor Day as a genuine sale event rather than a clearance one. Power tool combo kits hit near their annual lows, second only to Black Friday, and paint sale pricing over the holiday weekend is among the best of the year.
How to shop it: Combo kits beat individual tools by a wide margin if you need two or more items from the same battery platform. On paint, buy the quantity you need in one trip, because the sale is per gallon and the discount does not carry.
⏸️ What to Wait On
Televisions. September TV pricing is fine and November TV pricing is dramatically better. Black Friday is the annual floor for televisions and it is not close.
Laptops and tablets. The back-to-school promotional period is ending, and the holiday season pricing has not started. Labor Day is the dead zone between them.
Phones. Major flagship announcements land in September. Buying a phone the week before a launch event is the single most avoidable mistake on this list.
Holiday decor. It has started appearing. It will be 50% off on December 26.
Winter coats and boots. These have just arrived at full price. The discount window is January.
Toys. October and November pricing is much better, and the selection is complete.
🔎 How to Tell a Real Labor Day Deal From Retail Theater
Every retailer will show you a crossed-out price this weekend. Most of those crossed-out numbers are fiction.

Watch for the sale-exclusive model number. Big box retailers commission specific model variants for holiday sales, with slightly different specs and a model number that exists nowhere else so the price cannot be compared. Understand why your price might differ from your friend’s. Retailer pricing engines adjust based on your device, location, and browsing history. That is not paranoia, it is documented practice, and I walked through it in how retailers decide what you pay.
Do not open a store card at the register. The 20% off first purchase offer will be aggressive this weekend, and on a mattress or appliance purchase the math occasionally works. Build your list now, with target prices. Write down what you want and what you are willing to pay for it. A list built during a sale is a list built by the retailer.
Sign up for the email lists this week. Most retailers send early access to subscribers a day or two before public sale pricing. And if you want a welcome discount out of it, the unsubscribe trick is worth running first.
